What is Vestibular Therapy?
The vestibular system is the sensory system responsible for helping you maintain balance and a sense of steadiness in your environment. Dysfunction in the inner ear or its communication with the brain can result in dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness on your feet, and poor balance. Vestibular disorders are surprisingly common in the United States, with studies showing that over one in three adults aged 40 and older have experienced some form of vestibular dysfunction.
Symptoms of a vestibular disorder may include:
Vertigo or spinning sensations
Dizziness
Unsteadiness on your feet
Falls
Visual changes
Nausea
Difficulty walking
Headaches
Poor balance
Our goal is to address these symptoms and help you move confidently and safely in your daily life through individualized treatment plans.
What is BPPV?
BPPV, or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, is a common inner ear disorder that causes brief episodes of dizziness or vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear become dislodged from their usual location and move into one of the semicircular canals. These crystals disrupt the normal fluid movement in the canals, leading to a false sense of spinning or movement, particularly when the head is moved in certain positions.
Symptoms often include:
Dizziness or spinning sensations, especially with head movements
Lightheadedness
Balance problems
Nausea
BPPV is usually triggered by specific head movements, like turning over in bed or looking up. While it can be quite uncomfortable, it is generally considered benign and can often be treated effectively with maneuvers like the Epley maneuver, which helps reposition the crystals. If you suspect you have BPPV, it's a good idea to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Can Physical Therapy help BPPV?
Physical therapy can be very effective for treating BPPV. A specialized form of physical therapy known as vestibular rehabilitation is often used. This includes techniques and maneuvers designed to help reposition the displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear, such as the Epley maneuver or the Semont maneuver.
In addition to repositioning maneuvers, a physical therapist can provide exercises to improve balance and reduce dizziness, helping you regain confidence in movement. If you’re experiencing symptoms of BPPV, consulting a physical therapist with experience in vestibular disorders can be a great step toward relief.
Concussion Rehabilitation
A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury, often caused by a trauma or a direct blow to the head, which can affect brain function. Symptoms of a concussion may include headaches, difficulty concentrating, problems with balance and coordination, and memory challenges. The old belief that "rest is best" is no longer considered the optimal approach to concussion recovery. Instead, carefully monitored physical therapy, guided by a skilled clinician, is essential for maximizing recovery and avoiding chronic post-concussive symptoms.
Physical therapy for post-concussive care is highly specialized. Cloudline is staffed with clinicians who have undergone advanced, post-doctorate concussion training and have gained the necessary certifications to treat this condition. Therapists focus on safely reintroducing stimuli to your body while monitoring your progress to ensure a smooth recovery. Our personalized therapy programs aim to improve balance, reduce headaches, and restore cognitive and physical function.
